I just love hearty egg dishes for breakfast. Fluffy quiches, egg casseroles, frittatas…they’re all delicious! The beauty of working with eggs in dishes like these is that you can let your creativity run wild. Today I want to show you several simple rations that will help you make egg-based dishes without the confines of a recipe. Let’s get right into it!

Part 1: Base Ingredients & Ratios for Egg Dishes

When it comes to quiches, casseroles, and frittatas, there are a few ingredients you will pretty much always need. These form the “custard” mixture that give your egg dish the right body and texture.

From there, you can add endless amounts of fillings and toppings!

Below you will find the basic ingredients for an egg custard in a ratio form. This will help you customize egg dishes that know no bounds!

<polyline points="9 11 12 14 22 4"/>

Basic Pesto Ratio

– 1 part basil or other leafy herb (i.e. 4 oz)
– 1 part cheese (i.e. 4 oz)
– 2 parts olive oil 1 parts olive oil (i.e. 8 oz)
– 1/2 part nuts (i.e. 2 oz)

You’ll need both eggs and milk to make a great egg custard dish. Now, there are variations of course that you can do (for example, sour cream instead of milk). But we’ll get into that in a little bit.

First, let’s delve a little deeper into the ratio.

cheese + chive quiche

The Amount of Milk

As you can see, I wrote two different options for the ratio of milk to eggs. Each amount of milk will yield a slightly different texture in your final egg dish!

The only time I don’t like using more milk is when I’m making a deep quiche. I’ve found that the texture just gets to be a little too custardy and not “eggy” enough. The word I would use to describe it is jiggly.

It’s not my preferred texture, but it might be yours! If so, you can still use this ratio for a large, deep quiche.

As for egg casseroles, I’ve tried both ratios of milk and I like them both just fine.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind: the higher the percentage of eggs to milk, the more firm your eggs will end up.

Serving Size

If you’re using only 6 eggs + milk, this amount works great in a square pan or a pie pan. You should have just enough custard!

On the other hand, 12 eggs works great for a 9″ by 13″ pan, or 2 small quiches. It does depend on how full you want to fill your pans. You could use the bigger formula for just one quiche and it would fill up the pan very high.

Salt Levels

It is essential that you include enough salt in your egg custard mixture. Your final egg dish will just be THAT much better if it is seasoned well.

I thought about giving a specific amount of salt in the ratio based on my tests, but that doesn’t work because the salt will also be impacted by the cheese you use.

If you’re using a very salty cheese, you’ll need less salt in the eggs. One thing I like to do is scramble up a tiny little portion of my egg custard, and then taste it with a small piece of the cheese I’m using.

Formula Varations

There are many ways you can change up the original custard ratio! Here are some ideas:

Sub the milk for half and half or heavy cream: this will result in a richer custard base

Sub the milk (or half the milk) for sour cream: this will be richer and add a little tang

Dairy free? You can use other options like almond milk or oat milk, but the creaminess won’t be quite the same.

No milk at all? You can also sub in water like this recipe does.

You can also change up the ratio of eggs to liquid! This ratio is what I learned in culinary school and I do think it works well, but you are always free to experiment. (For example, the recipe linked right above uses 5 eggs to 1/2 cup water).

Part 2: Filling Ingredients in Egg Casseroles + Quiche

Now comes the FUN part: adding other ingredients to your egg dishes! This has got to be my favorite part.

Once you have the basic custard recipe in your head, you can come up with a million different flavor combinations! Before I give you a list of suggestions on that front, let’s talk about a few key principles for egg dish fillings.

1. Saute Hearty Vegetables

You almost never want to put veggies into a quiche or casserole raw. I know its one extra step, but it really is a needed step.

The veggies just won’t break down enough in the oven. So throw them in some hot oil and saute them in a pan until they start to get tender and release their moisture (we don’t want that moisture in the egg dish!)

2. Get Creative With Cheese

While you don’t HAVE to add cheese to your egg dish, it really adds depth of flavor that I personally don’t like to miss out on.

Yes, you can simply use cheddar. But why stay with just one option? Cheese have all SORTS of flavors, levels of saltiness, etc.

Extra sharp white cheddar, gruyere, feta, ricotta, parmesan…they all can add something unique to your egg dish.

Some cheese are more expensive than others, so I totally get that’s not an option for everyone. If you go for anything unique, at least try adding some fresh parmesan or sharp white cheddar. The parm will add a little sweetness and nuttiness, whereas sharp white cheddar adds a unique saltiness that I very much enjoy.

How much cheese to add? It is variable! I would do roughly 1 cup per 6 eggs. But honestly, I never measure. I just throw a layer of cheese in and call it good.

3. Add a Starch

When it comes to egg casseroles, you can go further than just veggies and cheese: you can add a starch! Here are the most common options:

Hashbrowns

Tater Tots

Biscuits

Day old bread

I haven’t really seen these ingredients used in quiches, but they are great for casseroles. If you’re using bread, moisten it in the egg mixture.

Frozen hashbrowns, frozen tater tots, and biscuits can be added right in the bottom of a greased pan, topped with veggies and eggs, and cooked!

Also, note that you may not need as many eggs when adding a starch. For example, this recipe that uses 16oz of biscuits only uses 6 eggs for a 9″ by 13″ pan. There are SO many other ingredients that you don’t need to completely fill the pan with eggs!

<polyline points="9 11 12 14 22 4"/>

15 Egg Dish Flavor Combo Ideas

Broccoli Cheddar: sauted onion & broccoli, cheddar cheese
Cheese & Chive: Cheddar, gruyere, parmesan, and fresh chives
Mushroom Leek: sauted mushrooms and leeks, gruyere or white cheddar with parmesan
Cheddar & Sausage: sauted onions, browned sausage, cheddar cheese
Sun Dried Tomato: fresh mozzarella, sundried tomatoes, fresh basil
Ultimate Veggie: sauted onion, broccoli, bell peppers, etc. Cheese optional
Spinach Feta: sauted onions, spinach, and feta sprinkled on top
Sausage Mushroom: sauted onions & mushrooms, browned sausage
Ham & Swiss: chopped ham, swiss cheese
Asparagus Goat Cheese: sauted asparagus topped with goat cheese
Kale & Parmesan: sauted onions & kale, parmesan
Feta & Dill: fresh dill, lemon zest, sauted garlic, topped with feta
Caramelized Onion: caramelized onions, bacon (optional), parmesan
Tater Tot Casserole: bacon, frozen tater tots, cheddar
Sausage Biscuit: can of biscuits, browned sausage, sauted onion, white cheddar

Part 3: Layering Your Egg Dish

Once you’ve got the ingredients for your egg dish finalized, it’s time to assemble and bake it, right?

This is very easy to do. If you’re making a quiche, you’ll need the crust in the pie plate first.

If you’re making a casserole or crustless quiche, make sure to grease the pan with butter or olive oil first.

Then, you’re going to follow a series of steps:

<polyline points="9 11 12 14 22 4"/>

Egg Dish Assembly

1. Add starch (biscuits, hashbrowns, etc.) in a layer (if using)
2. Add a layer of veggies
3. Add a layer of cheese
4. Pour over the egg custard mixture
5. Top with more cheese & decorative veggies (optional)

It really is that simple! When you’re prepping and chopping, keep in mind the veggies will shrink after sauteing.

You really just want enough veggies to make a nice layer in the bottom of the pan you’re using.

Bake Time & Temperature

Egg dishes are usually baked at either 350 or 375 degrees. The baking time will vary depending on how full your pan is.

You’ll know its done when it reaches an internal temp of 160 degrees.

You can also look for these visual cues: the eggs should rise quite a bit, and start to brown slightly. Any pockets of egg white on top should be cooked and opaque, not raw.

Conclusion

I hope this article is helpful in creating your own custom egg dish at home, with ingredients you already have! Have flavor combo ideas? Comment and let me know, I would love to hear!

11. Peach Mango Strawberry Smoothie

Last, but not least, here is a smoothie that includes a trio of fruits! This Peach Mango Strawberry Smoothie may be a mouthful to say, but it is nonetheless delicious. It is a nice and simple recipe that uses a ripe peach, along with frozen mango and strawberries. You won’t want to miss it!

How to Make a Thick Smoothie Without Yogurt

Now that we’ve looked at some awesome recipes, let’s talk about customization. Maybe you don’t want to follow a recipe. Maybe you just want to know how you can make a thick smoothie with the ingredients you have on hand, without adding yogurt.

Yogurt is often used as a thickener for smoothies made from fresh fruit. If you add fresh fruit to a blender, it releases all its juices and the resulting smoothie will not be thick.

So if you DON’T want to use yogurt, you have a few options.

Use Frozen Fruit + Fruit Juice

This is by far my favorite option for thick smoothies without yogurt. I start with a base of frozen fruit, and add fruit juice so that everything will blend nicely. The resulting smoothie is thick, sweet, and delicious, with no yogurt necessary.

If you would like to make your own custom smoothie like this, you can use this recipe formula:

1/2 banana, frozen

1/2 cup frozen fruit of choice

1/2 cup fruit juice

Any desired flavorings or sweeteners

Let me expand on this a little more. I recommend using a half of a frozen banana because it adds sweetness and creaminess to the smoothie.

In my tests, I found that smoothies made with frozen fruit without banana are a bit tart. So you CAN use 1 cup of any frozen fruit and exclude the banana, but just keep this in mind!

As for the liquid amount, you can really use as much juice as you’d like until you get a good consistency. This isn’t about following a recipe so much as it is about your own preference, and the equipment you have. If your blender isn’t heavy duty enough, you may need to add extra liquid to blend the frozen fruit.

Use a Blend of Fresh & Frozen Fruit

Another way you can get around the use of yogurt is to use a blend of fresh fruit and frozen fruit! The frozen fruit will still help the smoothie thicken up, while the fresh fruit will add liquid and flavor (so long as it’s ripe).

Here is the formula I use for this:

1 cup frozen fruit

1/2 cup fresh fruit

Liquid (juice, milk, water) to adjust consistency

Any desired flavorings or sweeteners

With this smoothie, the banana isn’t as necessary because the fresh fruit can provide more sweetness as long as it is ripe. You can absolutely still use banana though if you like the flavor and texture it provides!

Again, the amount of liquid to add depends on your blender and your personal preference, so don’t be afraid to experiment.

What to Add to Smoothies

So once you have the base formula and ingredients down, you can get even more creative with your smoothie!

There’s tons of little things you can add to smoothies that give them extra flavor and texture.

Oats for texture protein

Protein powder (adds more thickeness too)

Splash of vanilla

Sprinkle of cinnamon, ginger, cloves, or other warm spices

Honey or maple syrup for sweetness

Nuts for texture and protein

Milk (dairy or non-dairy) for extra liquid and creaminess

Spinach, kale, or carrots for added nutrients

Ice cream (if you don’t care about it being healthy)

Pork is well-loved because it is merely delicious. Why is pork so well-liked? The answer is that it’s fantastic, regardless of how it’s treated, cured, or cooked, and it’s excellent as ham, pork ribs, pork chops, sausages of all types, and bacon. However, as with most spoilt things, all those thoughts of yumminess go out the window when pork goes bad. So, how can do you know if pork has gone bad?

Generally, when pork begins to go bad, it emits a sour stench that deepens and intensifies over time. Raw pork will also change color and feel slimy to the touch. Cooked pork left in a warm area overnight will not show any signs of having gone bad but will most likely make you sick when consumed.

Many cuts of a pig are as lean as and sometimes even leaner than chicken, and they include more vitamins and minerals than poultry. For instance, skinless chicken breast and pork tenderloin are both equally lean types of meat. If you regularly consume pork, your senses, like taste, smell, and eyesight, will accurately alert you if the pork has gone bad.

How To Tell If Pork Is Bad

One of the most obvious ways you can tell pork has gone bad is when you feel sick soon after consuming it. However, the goal is to recognize some common signs of bad pork before it gets to that. There shouldn’t be much to smell to fresh pork. Pork should be thrown away if it has any sour, weird, or ammonia-like odors.

Vacuum-packed pork deviates from this rule. Although it has a slight odor, it should go away when the meat is rinsed under cold water. Interestingly enough, there are several ways one can tell when pork has gone bad when it is raw, frozen, cooked and left out, cooked and refrigerated, and cooked and frozen.

Sign #1: Raw Pork Changes Color

When it comes to uncooked pork, there will be several indications that it is no longer fit for consumption. You will notice the pork changing from the well-known pinkish color to grey and, even worse, a greenish tint.

Sign #2: Raw Pork Has Slimy Texture

When you touch the pork, the surface’s texture will have slime or be sticky. The feel of the slimy texture is somewhat similar to that of the slime of snails.

Sign #3: Raw Pork Has An Ammonia-Like Smell

Another screaming indication that pork has gone bad is when the odor changes from the typical meat smell to sour and then downright objectionable.

These are the consequences of spoilage microorganisms, which are difficult to overlook. Bacterial and parasite diseases are still present, but spoiling organisms multiply quickly, even if the meat is at refrigerator temperatures.

Check for strange smells on other meat products too, like ground turkey or chicken broth.

Sign #4: Cooked Pork Will Have A Sour Odor

Unlike raw pork, where you can immediately tell that something is off from the get-go, it’s a little more complicated if you look at thoroughly cooked pork. How it was cooked does not necessarily matter. Suppose you did not notice that the pork you cooked was already well on its way to being bad. In that case, the signs are different.

Although the general thought process is that cooked meat is free of organisms that can spoil it, that isn’t the case. Other rotting organisms will survive cooking temperatures; others will be introduced by handling since cooking.

What you can do to confirm whether or not cooked pork is bad is to smell it. Cooked pork will often not have the same immediate physical changes. However, you can expect there to be a specific odor. If there is a sour odor, then your pork has gone bad.

Note that it may be harder to detect a bad smell in stronger, flavored pork sausage, so be extra careful with this kind of pork!

Sign #5: Unrefrigerated Pork Will Make You Sick When Eaten

Apart from being able to tell how cooked pork is bad when it was rotten before being cooked, you will also need to be able to tell if pork that was good and has been cooked is still good. That is, if it is left unrefrigerated.

If the pork has been subjected to temperature mistreatment after cooking, for example, after cooking the pork, you forget to place it in the fridge and simply leave it in the pot in a kitchen that is warm overnight. There may be no noticeable alterations.

You might not notice anything different for some time when pathogenic organisms, which are disease-producing, increase as opposed to rotting organisms. Salmonella could be there to cause illness well before changes become apparent.

Furthermore, specific pathogens like Trichinella should be eliminated during cooking. Unfortunately, sometimes people are in a hurry or simply unaware of how long certain meat needs to be cooked. Therefore, the time taken to cook the pork could have been insufficient.

Related: how to tell if broccoli is bad

More Questions About What Makes Pork Go Bad

What makes pork go bad?

Pigs are better for the environment since they emit far fewer greenhouse gases. Compared to a variety of meats and poultry, pork performs well in terms of fat, cholesterol, and calories. However, even with all those benefits, it still isn’t immune to going bad. So, what makes pork go bad?

Essentially, bacteria make pork go bad. Bacteria tend to grow exponentially in any meat that is in the danger zone temperature-wise. This would be 40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. To ensure that bacteria do not have a chance to take residence on your pork, ensure that it is kept cold. That way, it will not go bad.

Can you cook pork even when it has gone bad?

Yes, you can choose to cook pork once it has gone bad, but the question is, is it safe? Some people think they can still cook or even recook spoiled pork. The answer is that the damage has already been done as there is a bunch of bacteria.

When the pork smells bad, it’s time to throw it out. If you attempt to cook spoiled pork, it will only intensify the foul flavor and odor. To evaluate whether something is safe to consume, use your sense of smell, which evolution has refined over many millennia. If it smells nasty, it probably is.

Remember to check the use-by or sell-by dates at all times. Prior to purchasing or preparing pork, verify the package date. Prepare or freeze pork by its use-by date if one is listed. Cook or freeze pork loin, ribs, steaks, or chops within 3-5 days of purchase if no sell-by date is specified. Pork that has passed its use-by or sell-by date should not be consumed unless it had been properly frozen prior to that time.

How does bad pork apply to frozen pork?

Suppose you have pork sitting in the freezer for several months and even years. Whether your pork is rotten will primarily rely on how it was before it was frozen. Bacterial growth is significantly slowed but not entirely stopped by freezing.

Generally, you can eat it if it wasn’t significantly infected before freezing. However, don’t eat anything that tastes or smells terrible. The taste and texture of the meat undoubtedly deteriorate, and the meat’s quality also does.

As mentioned above, bad pork can be easy to see. So the signs will be noticeable when it defrosts or is finished cooking. The best thing to do for raw meat is to use your nose to see if there are any unusual smells. You’ll want to also use your eyes to check out any color changes, and lastly, touch the pork to ensure that there is no slimy texture.

Conclusion

There are so many different cuts of pork to enjoy at home – pork chops, loin, ribs, etc.! But sometimes you get a bad apple, or maybe you let your pork sit in the fridge too long. Make sure to examine the smell & appearance before cooking the pork to ensure you don’t get sick from it!

Sloppy joes are time-saving and simple to feed your hungry family. But sometimes, things go wrong. In the scramble to have dinner ready on time, your sloppy joe filling can end up runnier than it’s supposed to be.

There are various ways to thicken sloppy joes. You can thicken your sloppy joe mix using cornstarch, flour, or potato starch or by letting it simmer and reduce. The most effective thickening method is to use cornstarch mixed with water and add it slowly into your filling.

If the filling for your sloppy joes is thinner than you’d like, don’t worry, you can keep your title as the dinner hero. You won’t have to order in if it is almost dinner time. There are several quick and easy methods for saving your sloppy joes by thickening them up.

Why Thicken Sloppy Joes Anyway?

You might be wondering, can I just leave my sloppy joes as is? The extra “juice” still tastes good, right?

Well yes, it does taste okay, but you still may want to thicken it up. Here’s why:

If there is too much juice, it will soak into the bun and make for a soggy mess

That juice can also run out onto your hands, tablecloth and easily make for a disaster with kids

Reducing your sauce to thicken it actually makes for more complex flavors—so everyone will love the sloppy joes even more

5 Ways To Thicken Sloppy Joes

If a recipe has done you wrong and you’ve ended up with a sloppier joe than you like, there are ways to remedy the situation. By now I’m sure you’re ready to dig into the exact methods for thickening your sloppy joes.

So let’s take a closer look!

Save this information for later by pinning to Pinterest

Tip #1: Add Cornstarch

Cornstarch, also known as corn flour, is commonly used as a thickening agent in foods. You can find cornstarch quite easily at any grocery store. If your filling ends up with a runnier consistency than you would have preferred, add some cornstarch to thicken it. It’s easy and won’t change the look – or taste – of your filling.

Typically for every two to three cups of filling you’re making, you’ll need to mix a tablespoon of tepid water and a tablespoon of cornstarch. Do this in a separate bowl and mix thoroughly to avoid lumps.

If you end up with lumps, they’re easy to get rid of. You can do this by pressing any clumps of cornstarch against the wall of the container you are using. This will make the slurry easier to mix with fewer lumps.

It’s best to mix your cornstarch with water before adding it to your filling. There is a good reason for this. Adding cornstarch directly to your filling will create lumps that are almost impossible to remove. These lumps do not absorb any of the water in your filling. This means that your filling will have unappetizing lumps and won’t be able to thicken.

Once you have your cornstarch mixture, you can slowly add it to your filling. While stirring, bring the sloppy joe filling to a simmer to allow the cornstarch to mix in completely. After you have mixed the cornstarch into your filling, let it simmer for a couple of minutes. The cornstarch taste should be gone when it’s completely mixed in, and your filling should be slightly thicker.

Tip #2: Add Flour

Flour is a common ingredient in most pantries, so you won’t have to run to the store to save dinner! Flour is another great ingredient you can use to thicken a sauce or filling. It also contains starch, which is a great substitute when you don’t have cornstarch or other thickening agents.

Flour is not pure starch like cornstarch but contains a large portion of this ingredient. Because it contains less starch, you will need to use twice as much flour as you would cornstarch. So, if you find that your sloppy joe filling is runnier than you want it, you just have to mix flour with tepid water and slowly add that mixture to your filling.

The process for mixing flour and water is almost identical to when using cornstarch. However, when using flour, you would use two tablespoons of flour for every tablespoon of water. The ratio of this mixture to filling is the same. For about every two cups of filling, you would combine one measure of the mixture. Like cornstarch, make sure to mix it well to avoid lumps.

Bring the heat to a boil and stir the mixture in slowly. The downside of using flour is that it can create a specific taste. To get rid of this taste, keep stirring your filling and keep it at a simmer until it is thoroughly mixed. If your filling is still not thick enough, you can do it again until you have the correct thickness. Let it simmer for a short while before serving.

Tip #3: Add Potato Starch

Potato starch, sometimes called potato flour, is another great alternative to cornstarch. Potato starch can be a healthier option as well! Many potato starch variations are free from gluten, GMOs, dairy, and soy. Potato starch also has fewer calories and carbohydrates than cornstarch.

Gluten and dairy-free products are becoming more and more popular. In some cases, these options are necessary. For example, people may simply want a healthier alternative, have dietary restrictions, or have food allergies.

The method of adding potato starch to your sloppy joe filling is the same as adding cornstarch. Mix a tablespoon of this starch with a tablespoon of water for every two to three cups of filling you’ve made. Make sure to mix it well, so there are no lumps before adding it to your filling.

Starch typically can’t withstand higher temperatures, so it is recommended that it is added to warm food. The starch will start to break down at higher temperatures, and your filling won’t be able to thicken. Potato starch, however, can withstand higher temperatures than cornstarch. So, if your filling is still hot and you can see that it isn’t thick enough, try using potato starch instead!

Tip #4: Reduce Your Filling By Letting It Simmer

If you don’t have any thickeners handy, another method is to take the lid off the pot and let it reduce. To reduce your filling to a thicker consistency, leave the lid off, bring it to a simmer, and stir often. Doing this will allow some of the excess moisture to evaporate. Stirring often is important if you don’t want your filling burning or sticking to the pot.

This method also works for a variety of soups and sauces, including marinara, salsa, baked beans, tomato soup, and gumbo.

Tip #5: Add Peanut Butter

This may not be the first thing that comes to your mind, but believe it or not, peanut butter can work to thicken sloppy joes! As peanut butter melts into your sauce, it will change the consistency and thicken it.

In order to thicken sloppy joes with peanut butter, add a few tablespoons and let it completely dissolve. Allow it to simmer for 10-15 minutes to ensure this happens.

Once done, you will love the consistency, and you won’t even be able to taste the peanut butter!

More Questions About Thickening Sloppy Joes

Can You Use Arrowroot To Thicken Sloppy Joes?

Yes. Arrowroot starch is a gluten-free alternative to cornstarch. Arrowroot leaves no taste after mixing it with your sloppy joe filling.

How Long Does Starch Take To Thicken?

Starch takes one to two minutes to thicken. To fully activate starch’s thickening effect, the filling needs to be brought to a boil. You’ll need to add your starch and then bring the heat to a boil while stirring in the mixture.

When your sloppy joe mix reaches a boil, you can simmer it for a minute or two until your filling has thickened. Remember not to leave it simmering for too long, as your filling will lose its moisture and can start to thin again.

Do You Mix Cornstarch With Hot Or Cold Water?

It would be best if you mixed cornstarch with cold water. Hot water will break down the starch molecules, and it won’t be able to thicken your filling. Rather, add starch to cold water and mix it well. Once the mixture is smooth, you can stir the filling while slowly adding it to the warm filling.

Is Starch Vegan?

Yes. Starch is a plant-based ingredient that is made from corn. Because there are no animal products or additives, and the only ingredient is starch made from corn, it is safe for vegans and vegetarians.

Conclusion

Sloppy joes are a delicious family meal for any night! However, if you find your sloppy joe mixture has gotten too runny, you may need to fix it. Using a starch you have on hand, or reducing the mixture, are both great options! I hope you found this article helpful. Good luck with your next sloppy joe meal!

It is a lovely sunny day, and you are sitting by the pool enjoying a creamy, thick milkshake. If you are like me, who cannot make a perfectly thick homemade milkshake, then you need to adjust some of the ingredients. How do you thicken a milkshake?

Add more ice cream to thicken your milkshake, or you can use heavy whipping cream instead of milk. Usually, yogurt and crème fraiche does the trick too. These are a few of the easiest methods to use for a creamy and thick consistency for homemade milkshakes.

There are more ways you can thicken a milkshake. Read on to discover how to make a thick and delicious milkshake! I will list a few tips you can use if all else fails.

How To Thicken a Milkshake or Smoothie

There are many ways you can fix a watery milkshake. Ideally, you should use whole milk when you make milkshakes instead of skim milk or 1 percent milk. Usually, extra scoops of ice cream produce the desired results, but if you are low on that from making too many milkshakes, then yogurt, heavy whipping cream, and natural sour cream (however, it might change the flavor) can also be used.

From experience, I found that 1 cup of heavy whipping milk mixed with a tablespoon of buttermilk also thickens the consistency of the milkshake, and if you add a few cubes of crushed ice, you cannot go wrong either!

Tip #1: Thicken Milkshake Using Extra Ice-cream

A simple and easy method is adding some extra ice cream scoops to the milkshake. Sometimes the milkshake contains too much milk and not enough ice cream. Add about two scoops of ice cream; it will not only thicken the milkshake but also enhance the taste!

Tip#2: Blend Full Fat Yogurt To Thicken The Milkshake

Suppose you are worried that adding more ice cream can make the milkshake too thick, then add yogurt. Only use whole-fat yogurt because it is much creamier. The upside is you can blend any yogurt flavor if you want to change your milkshake. You do not have to keep to plain whole-fat yogurt. You cannot go too overboard with the ice cream; otherwise, you will not be able to drink your milkshake.

Tip #3: Add Chocolate Syrup To Thicken Milkshake

Adding chocolate syrup is a tasty way to thicken the milkshake. Obviously, you can use any syrup flavor, but I prefer the delicious chocolate kind. Squeeze in the syrup of your choice to thicken the consistency of the milkshake. The syrup is thicker in consistency than milk, so that it will work excellently.

Tip #4: Use Ice Cubes To Make The Milkshake Thicker

Crush some ice cubes and add them to the runny milkshake. The crushed ice will thicken the milkshake immediately; however, when the ice melts, the milkshake can become watery again. The upside is that after adding the ice cream, the milkshake can serve as a frozen coffee or cappuccino since there will be a slight change in the consistency.

Tip #5: Add Fruit To Thicken Milkshake

I love all things fruity! Therefore I suggest mixing some of your favorite fruits into the milkshake. It will thicken the consistency and add great flavor. Some of the greatest fruits to add are bananas, berries, mangos, pineapple, and papaya.

Tip #6: Use Whipping Cream To Thicken Milkshake

Whipping is high in fat and deliciously thick, so there is no doubt that it will thicken the milkshake’s consistency. To thicken the milkshake using whipping cream, add one tablespoon at a time while stirring the milkshake. Do this until you reach your desired outcome.

Tip #7: Only Use Full-Fat Ingredients In Your Milkshake

For a milkshake to become creamy and smooth, you must use whole-fat ingredients. It is what makes your milkshake thick and creamy. Using low-fat ice cream, low-fat yogurt, or low-fat or skim milk will not do the milkshake any good no matter how much you try to increase its creaminess. It will only make the milkshake runny and watery.

Tip #8: Use Crème Fraiche To Thicken Milkshake

Adding crème fraiche to the milkshake can also thicken its consistency. If you want to try out this method, start by adding only a little crème fraiche. It is sour cream with a nutty taste that might alter your milkshake’s flavor.

Tip #9: Use Buttermilk To Thicken Milkshake

Mix one tablespoon of buttermilk with one cup of whipping cream for a thicker consistency. Before adding the thick and creamy mixture to the milkshake, cover the buttermilk and whipping cream mixture with plastic wrap and leave it at room temperature for 24 hours. Afterward, fold it in the milkshake and enjoy your delicious drink!

Tip #10: Add The Milkshake To A Blender For A Thicker Consistency

Throw the ingredients in a high-speed electric blender and watch how it thickens! Once you are happy with the results, pour the milkshake into a tall glass, and add a funky straw and a cute little umbrella. By now, you must be excited to gulp down your nice, thick, and creamy homemade milkshake.

More Questions About How To Thicken Milkshakes

How Do You Fix A Melted Milkshake?

Suppose your milkshake melted after standing outside for too long. In that case, you can pour the melted milkshake into the electric blender, add a few ice cubes, and any thickening ingredient of your choice, such as whole fat yogurt, syrup, full-fat ice cream, milk, heavy whipping cream, etc. Blend the ingredients until it creamy again.

Can Eggs Thicken Milkshakes?

Adding an egg can enhance the frothiness and creaminess of the milkshake. Not many people are keen on adding an egg to their milkshake, so it is optional.

Why Is My Milkshake Still Runny?

If your milkshake is still runny and watery after adding thickening ingredients, it may be because you added too much milk. It would help to keep the ratio in mind when pouring milk into your milkshake. If you do not add enough, it can be challenging to drink.

How Long Should I Blend Milkshake For It To Thicken?

It depends upon the kind of blender you have. The blender should be able to chop and mix the ingredients well. Usually, you only need to blend it for up to two minutes if you have a good blender.

Should I Boil Milk Before Making Milkshake?

If you are using raw milk (milk that has not been pasteurized to eliminate harmful bacteria), it is an absolute must to boil the milk before making milkshakes. During the boiling process, the harmful bacteria will be destroyed.

How Do I Keep Milkshakes Thicker For Longer?

Firstly, before gathering the ingredients, ensure that you are ready to serve the milkshake before making it. Once the milkshake is well blended, it can start melty pretty quickly, so place your milkshake glasses in the freezer to make it chilly and cold. It will keep the ice cream in the milkshake frozen for longer.

Can I Add Corn Flour To Thicken Milkshake?

Since milkshake is a cold beverage, you cannot use corn flour to thicken it. Corn flour must be boiled to thicken, so it will be hot if you add it to the milkshake.

How Can I Make A Thick Milkshake Without Milk?

You can blend diced avocados for thickness and creaminess. Add frozen bananas to substitute the milk, yogurt, or rolled oats. All these ingredients can work as substitutes for milk and will make it thick and creamy. If you have allergies, then plant milk can work too.

Conclusion

Milkshakes are an amazing treat on a hot summer day. If you accidentally make your milkshake too runny, there are a variety of fixes that will thicken it back up! Try adding more ice cream, or other ingredientes you may have in the fridge. You will love the result!

If you love cooking and spend a generous amount of time in the kitchen, chances are you will have experimented with some ways to improve your dish or rectify any flops. I love being in the kitchen, and I have had my fair share of flops, so I have a few tips on how you can easily thicken your tomato soup for a warm hearty soup that hits the spot.

Thickening tomato soup can be done in various ways using starch flour, starchy vegetables, adding cream, eggs, and cheese. Using the right tomatoes can also make a difference to the thickness of your soup, and roasting them before jumping directly into making the soup can help reduce excess water.

Tips On How To Thicken Tomato Soup

Don’t feel alone if you planned to make a delicious pot of heart tomato soup and it turned out a watery mix, but here are some tips that I learned to get that soup back on track and serve up a masterpiece.

Tip #1: Allow Your Soup To Simmer

The simplest and cheapest way to thicken your soup is to give it a little extra cooking time. Allow the soup to simmer uncovered over low to medium heat, which will allow the extra juice to evaporate and thicken naturally. This is also the ideal way to retain the original delicious flavors of the soup without changing any of the delicate flavors and textures.

Use this method also for thickening marinara sauce or cooked salsa.

Tip #2: Blend Your Tomato Soup

Another easy way to thicken your soup without changing flavor profiles is to blend it. You can a portion at a time in a high-powered blender or food processor, adding it gradually to the remaining soup in the pot until you have the consistency you want.

Or you can blend the whole pot at once with an immersion blender to puree the soup, giving you a smooth thick delicious soup.

Tip #3: Add Tomato Paste

Adding tomato paste is a sure way to thicken up a watery tomato soup, and since it’s made from tomatoes, it makes sense to add some to the soup.

However, utilize the tomato paste sparingly when using this method, as the concentrated paste can change the flavor of your soup. It may make it saltier and is best used before spicing up your pot. Start off diluting one spoon at a time until you reach the consistency you want.

Tip #4: Incorporate Starchy Vegetables

Adding some starchy vegetables can add extra texture and flavors to your soup, but it can also help thicken it (this method can also be used for thickening gumbo or baked beans!)

Adding some cubed starchy vegetables will help absorb some liquid while it is cooking, and vegetables like potatoes and butternut squash release starch when they cook, which will thicken up the soup simultaneously.

Here are some ideas for starchy vegetables that you can add to your soup to help thicken it up.

Sweet potato

Butternut squash

Red lentils

Potatoes

Beans

Red lentils are also a great combination with tomato soup and will quickly add body to the soup. Throw some red lentils into the soup, which will absorb liquid while it cooks and swells; once they are soft, mush them into the soup to thicken up the pot.

Tip #5: Add Instant Potato Flakes

Using some instant potato flakes or instant mash is another great way to thicken up your soup, but be careful and use a little at a time until you reach the consistency you want; adding too much may end up with a red mash instead of a creamy tomato soup.

Tip #6: Add Cream Or Greek Yoghurt

Adding heavy cream or Greek yogurt in the last twenty minutes of your soup cooking process not only helps to thicken it but also gives the soup a rich and creamy texture, with the Greek yogurt adding a new tangy dimension to your soup that works really well with tomato soups.

Remember to allow the soup to simmer gently in its pot once you have added the cream or yogurt, as boiling it may cause it to separate.

Tip #7: Make A Slurry Using Starch Flour

You can make a slurry to thicken your soup using any of the below starch flours.

Cornstarch

Arrowroot

Tapioca

Potato starch

A slurry is a mixture of any of the above starches with a little cold water that you add at the end of the process by mixing it in a separate bowl until smooth, then adding a little at a time to the soup.

Bring the pot to a boil and watch the soup thicken immediately, but remember to stir as you pour in the mix constantly, or you may have a lumpy soup; and do not use it in excess, or it may change the flavors of your delicious soup.

Tip #8: Make A Roux Using Flour

A Roux uses a similar process to a slurry, but in this process, an equal part of any flour and butter is used to make a thickening agent. This mix adds a creamy texture to your soup without using any creams. Below are some ideas of flours that you can use.

Wheat flour

Chickpea flour

Oat flour

Quinoa flour

Rice flour

Use unsalted butter that is melted in a pan and add equal parts of flour, mixing it to form a smooth paste. Add some broth to the mix, stirring until you get a smooth paste, and then add to your soup, constantly stirring until it thickens.

Tip #9: Add Eggs

Not exactly the first item that comes to mind when wanting to thicken a soup, but the addition of eggs is a great way to add rich flavors to your soup. You can use the whole egg, or only the egg yolk for a richer and deeper flavor, or just the egg whites for a lighter soup.

Whichever way you decide to go, remember to temper the egg before adding it to the soup, or you may land up with a scrambled tomato soup.

Tempering the egg is when you crack your egg in a separate bowl and gently ladle in some of your soup while vigorously whisking the concoction until you have a smooth mix. Once the right consistency is achieved, pour into the soup and stir until it thickens.

Tip #10: Add Some Cheese

No matter what your favorite flavor of cheeses is, you can add some sprinkles of cheese to thicken up a tomato soup, but it also adds a different taste to the soup, elevating its texture and flavors to be richer and creamier.

Tip #11: Add Nuts To Thicken The Soup

Adding nuts is another way to thicken your tomato soup, and it’s vegan too. But because nuts can have a very distinctive taste, it is always better to stick to neutral flavors such as,

Almond nuts

Cashew nuts

Making a smooth cream from either of these nuts will instantly thicken your soup and add a new nuttier dimension to the flavors. Add your nuts with a bit of water or broth in a blender or high-powered mixer and mix until you are left with a creamy smooth paste. Pour the creamy liquid into the pot and allow to simmer on low until your soup thickens.

Tip #12: Add Croutons

Another creative way to thicken your watery soup is by layering some croutons or bread on top of the soup. The bread will soften and absorb the liquid; the bread will finally become soft and melt away into the soup, thickening it up simultaneously.

A fun way to add dimension and flavor to the soup is to add flavored croutons to insert a little extra “je ne sais quoi” flavor profile to the soup.

More Questions Thickening Tomato Soup

Now that you are loaded with tips and ideas on how to thicken your delicious tomato soup, there is one thing left to do, and that’s cook up a storm, but before you go, here are some more helpful frequently asked questions to help you decide on a thickening agent.

What Is A Healthier Way To Thicken Tomato Soup?

There are healthier alternatives to thickening tomato soup than traditional cornstarch or flour. Using eggs and nuts is a more natural way to use low-carb products to thicken your soup. Instead of butter and oils, you could use avocados which are also another great healthy alternative to give body to your soup.

Which Is Better To Thicken Tomato Soup; Flour Or Cornstarch?

In my personal experience, I found that cornstarch or corn flour works better when thickening my soups. However, with that said, it greatly depends on how much thickening you need to do.

If you need to use a lot of flour to thicken up a watery soup, then it is best to go with the normal flour, as too much cornstarch can change the flavor profile of your soup and leave it with an undesired starchy taste.

How Can I Thicken My Tomato Soup Without Using Carbs?

Sometimes we don’t want to add extra carbs when thickening soups and just looking for something a little healthier with fewer calories. So thickening your tomato soup with some keto-thickening agents is also possible. Below are a few that can be handy to have around.

Xanthum gum

Glucomannan

How to Prevent Watery Tomato Soup

If it’s tomato season and you need to use up your stock, making a fresh batch of tomato soup is the ideal opportunity.

Using dense, oblong tomatoes from the plum variety with little juice will ensure you don’t boil up a pot of watery tomato soup. Below are some of the most popular tomatoes you can use for your delicious soup.

Roma

San Marzano

Amish paste

Big mama

Supremo

Ropreco Paste

Taking the time to roast the tomatoes slowly is a great way to ensure your soup is a success, and this method adds a great depth of flavor to your soup. You can use this alone or in conjunction with tin tomatoes to reduce your soup’s water content and accentuate the flavors.

Adding some sundried tomatoes is also a great way to use less watery tinned tomatoes and reduce the water content, but it also adds that extra burst of concentrated flavors.

Although you are not always guaranteed to find the perfect tomatoes in season, if you can’t find fresh tomatoes, don’t sweat; you can always use canned tomatoes, but to ensure you don’t land up with a watery mess, try to find canned San Marzano.

When using canned tomatoes, try to drain the liquid from the can and don’t rinse the can out. But if you are still left with a diluted soup, we also have some great tips for easily thickening your soup for that perfect bowl of delicious tomato soup.

Conclusion

Tomato soup is a hearty, healthy meal to have on a cold winter day. It is easy enough to make at home, but sometimes you might find the soup in need of thickening if something goes wrong. To thicken tomato soup, you can use a variety of ingredients like tomato paste, cheese, cream, or other vegetables. Which method is your favorite?

One of the most significant issues when making homemade salsa is when it turns out too watery. Most of us like our salsa to be thick and chunky, perfect for dipping tortilla chips or spreading on a fresh toasted crusty bread. If your salsa has turned out too runny and thin, I’ve found a few ways to help you thicken salsa.

You can thicken salsa by adding more ingredients suited to the type of salsa. Prevent salsa from becoming watery by choosing the right tomatoes, scooping, draining, and chopping them. Adding arrowroot or xanthan gum, additional tomato paste, and less-watery vegetables will help thicken salsa.

I love freshly made salsa with tomatoes, but I’ve had a couple of times where my salsa came out too watery, thin, and not appealing. If you’ve had a similar problem, you’ll know just how frustrating it can be, but don’t throw it away! There are a few ways to thicken salsa and prevent watery sauces.

How Do I Thicken Salsa?

There are several ways to rescue a watery salsa, usually by adding a thickener to help soak up some of the liquid or adding extra vegetable ingredients that are not watery.

Different salsas have different flavors, so you’ll want to stick to ingredients that compliment your salsa. The most common salsa is the tomato-based one, and these tomatoes are usually responsible for thinning down salsa and making it too liquid.

Some vegetables are chunky, less watery, and will help bulk up your salsa, while other ingredients can give your salsa a creamy texture.

By adding more ingredients, you’ll end up with more salsa, and you’ll need to taste test and adjust your seasonings, but when is too much salsa ever a problem?

My solutions also depend on whether you’re making fresh, raw salsa or a cooked sauce. Ensure you’re using ingredients or tips that work with your salsa type.

Tip #1: Thicken Fresh Salsa By Draining

If you’ve made fresh salsa and the tomatoes have left it watery, you can line a colander with a coffee filter and leave your salsa to drain. I recommend lining even a fine sieve with either filter paper or a clean cloth, allowing the liquid to drain without losing any smaller pieces of tomato.

If you’re thrifty, you can collect the strained juice to use in another dish.

Tip #2: Thicken Fresh Salsa With Xanthan Gum

When making fresh salsa with raw ingredients, you don’t want to add thickeners that need heating to work.

Heating a fresh salsa can change the taste and texture, so I’d avoid using cornflour and instead suggest xanthan gum.

Xanthan gum has a neutral flavor so that it won’t change the taste of your salsa. You’ll only need a small pinch to thicken your sauce. Blend your sauce well, and only add more in tiny amounts until you have the consistency you want.

Please don’t add too much, as it can change the texture of your sauce and could cause stomach troubles in large amounts.

Tip #3: Thicken Fresh Salsa With Avocado

Adding a creamy ingredient like avocado can give your salsa a thicker, richer texture. The tase of avocado also goes very well with fresh tomato salsa.

Only chop and add avocados right before serving to avoid the avo turning brown and going soft or pulpy.

Some people find adding avocado (or other bland foods like cucumber) takes away the spiciness of the salsa and makes it too mild.

Tip #4: Thicken Fresh Salsa With Peppers And Cucumbers

If you dislike the creamy texture of avocado, you can also bulk up your salsa by adding other fresh vegetables that don’t go watery, like tomatoes.

Good candidates are chopped jalapenos, bell peppers, and cucumbers. You can add extra cilantro to bulk up your salsa, but some people don’t like the ‘soapy’ taste, so use to suit.

Tip #5: Thicken Fresh Salsa With Mango Or Peach

Every extra ingredient you add will change the taste of your salsa, but this can be a good thing. If you know there are certain flavors you either want to use or avoid.

If you like sweet salsa, adding fresh chopped mango or peaches can be a great way to thicken salsa.

Tip #6: Thicken Fresh Salsa With Tomatillos

Tomatillos can be a great way to thicken a salsa by using a fruit native to Central America, and chopped tomatillos have different flavors depending on their color.

If you add green tomatillos, they will add a tart, fresh flavor, while the sweeter red and purple versions, often used in jam-making, add extra sweetness.

Tomatillos have natural pectins, which are thickening agents used in jams. Pectin requires heating, which is also a way to thicken cooked salsas.

Tip #7: Thicken Cooked Salsa With Longer Cooking Time

If you’ve made a cooked sauce, there are other ways to improve the thickness, usually requiring extra ingredients, thickeners, and heat.

The first way that uses no extra ingredients that could change the flavor is to cook your salsa over low heat. Cook your salsa in a wide pot or saucepan and leave the lid off so the moisture can escape.

Keep checking and frequently stirring to avoid your salsa burning, or sticking to the pan’s bottom. Cook until your salsa reaches the desired consistency.

This method also works for thickening marinara sauce, and baked beans.

Tip #8: Thicken Cooked Salsa With Tomato Paste

Once you’ve cooked your salsa mixture, you can add a tablespoon – or two, depending on how much salsa you’re making – to the sauce. Adding paste can add extra thickness and a richer, deeper tomato flavor. (Likewise, this also works with tomato soup!)

Tip #9: Thicken Cooked Salsa With Ground Seeds And Nuts

Mix and grind some suitable nuts and seeds, such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and almonds, to create a paste that you can add to your salsa. This ground paste will give your salsa a much earthier, nuttier flavor, which can work very well with salsa-topped crusty bread.

Use nuts that are not intensely flavored, and experiment to see which nuts and seeds work well for you.

Tip #10: Thicken Cooked Salsa With Arrowroot

Arrowroot is a common ingredient in many Asian and gluten-free kitchens and can be a great way to thicken your salsa. Never add arrowroot directly to the sauce, but first, blend it thoroughly with a little cold water.

Use a tiny amount to start, usually around half a teaspoon, and add the arrowroot mixture to your salsa at the end of the cooking time. The less time you heat it, the better, as prolonged heat can make it break down and lose its thickening properties.

As arrowroot has minimal flavor, it is unlikely to change the taste of your salsa, making it a better option for some than cornstarch.

In general, I’ve found arrowroot to be the best thickener for salsa; better than cornstarch, guar gum, and xanthan gum, though potato starch can also do in a pinch.

Tip #11: Thicken Cooked Salsa With Cornstarch

Cornstarch is a handy ingredient used to thicken cooked soups and sauces. Most of us have cornstarch in the pantry, and it’s relatively easy to use.

Many chefs prefer only to use cornstarch as a last resort, as it can affect the taste and texture of your salsa; however, it’s one of the most convenient ingredients, so if it’s all you have, here’s how to use it.

Mix a scant teaspoon of cornstarch with a little cold water to make a thin liquid, then add this to your salsa on the stovetop.

Stir in the liquid cornstarch mixture, and allow the salsa to thicken as you keep stirring. Cornstarch can also change the look of your salsa, so only add a tiny amount. Add near the end of the cooking time to prevent the thickener from breaking down and becoming thin again.

Is Salsa Meant To Be Watery?

There are different types of salsa, some of which are more thin and runny than others.

Pico de Gallo salsa made with tomato, onion, peppers, and cilantro should not be watery. Fresh salsa left to sit will become more watery as the ingredients break down as the salt draws out the liquid.

You can refresh your salsa and thicken it by straining it, but fresh salsa is best eaten just after it has been served.

If you plan to make your fresh Pico de Gallo salsa ahead of time, it’s best to leave the salt out until just before serving to prevent your salsa from becoming too watery.

What Salsa Is Meant To Be Thin?

The thin red cooked salsa, known as Salsa Taquera, will appear more sauce-like and thinner than the fresh variety and the cooked Salsa Roja. Thanks to the Arbol chiles, it also tends to have a kick.

Once cooked, this salsa is blended into a smooth sauce. It’s a thinner sauce than the purred, chunky Salsa Roja, which is made with tomato, onion, jalapenos, garlic, lime juice, cilantro, and salt.

It depends on what kind of salsa you’re preparing; some are meant to be thinner or thicker than others.

More Questions About Thickening Salsa

You can prevent your salsa from becoming too watery with some tips on ingredients choices and preparation.

What Tomatoes Should I Use for Thicker Salsa?

One of the reasons salsa can become so watery is because of the type of tomatoes used. Some tomatoes are much better for salsa; one of my favorites is the Roma tomato. Younger tomatoes will also have less juice, while riper ones will be more liquid.

Choose paste tomato for salsa, a tomato type that is fleshy and has few seeds and less juice. The best tomato types for salsa are:

Roma plum

Little Mama/Big Mama

Amish Paste

San Marzona

How to Prevent Watery Salsa?

Besides choosing tomatoes with less liquid and seeds, you can also avoid watery salsas by halving your tomatoes to scoop out the seeds, then chopping the tomatoes by hand rather than pureeing them in a blender.

Add salt only before serving, as salt draws moisture out of vegetables and can make your salsa watery the longer the sauce stands.

You can use salt to your advantage here by adding salt to your tomatoes while draining them to get even more liquid out before adding them to your salsa.

Can I Use Canned Tomatoes for a Thick Salsa?

You can use canned tomatoes for your salsa in a pinch, though the taste will be slightly different from fresh tomatoes. Always drain the canned tomatoes entirely before using them to avoid extra liquid in the salsa.

Using a can of fire-roasted tomatoes will improve the flavor, though many canned fire-roasted tomatoes also have additional seasonings, so taste-test your salsa before adding more spices.

Conclusion

Salsa is a wonderful Mexican dip that is beloved by many. You can easily make salsa at home by using a mixture of tomatoes, onions, and other ingredients. However, some of these ingredients are extra juice and can result in watery salsa if you don’t know what you’re doing. If this happens to you, try one of the above methods to thicken your salsa perfectly!

Keeping marinara sauce on hand is an excellent way to widen your cooking options. You may use it to make pizza, sandwiches, and baked pasta dishes. However, the thickening process, whether Marinara, spaghetti, pizza, or any other tomato-based sauce, remains the same.

My collection of tried and true methods for thickening marinara sauce includes combining cheese or dairy products for pasta dishes. A corn starch slurry or mashed potatoes will thicken the marinara sauce beautifully. If you have some time, it is always better to let it reduce and thicken.

The following are some suggestions that can help you make Marinara sauce even more delicious than it already is. So check out my list of proven ways to thicken the marinara sauce.

How To Fix A Marinara Sause That Is Too Runny

Maintaining a supply of marinara sauce in your pantry enables you to elevate various recipes. On the other hand, if you already have a marinara sauce that is too thin for your taste, there is always a method to make it thicker and more flavorful. You may improve your Marinara sauce-making skills by following the recommendations that are provided here.

There is no doubt that you may experiment with many different ways to thicken your marinara sauce. For instance, using it on a pizza will be slightly different from using it on pasta. Likewise, adding meat to your spaghetti marinara sauce helps improve the taste and thickness.

Tip #1: By Reduction

Simmering the Marinara sauce over a stovetop burner set to medium-low heat is the easiest way to get the desired consistency of a reduced sauce. If you don’t want to add something additional to the sauce, this is a great method. To avoid scorching, stir regularly.

Boil the marinara sauce for a few more hours or until it has reached the required thickness and the liquid has mostly evaporated. It will result in a marinara sauce that is robust and concentrated. Keep in mind that the sauce will be thicker when cold.

This is great to keep in mind especially if you are making marinara from fresh tomatoes. Since tomatoes have a lot of liquid, do not panic if the sauce is very runny at first. It needs to reduce for a long time to turn into marinara.

See the photo below for an example of fresh marinara that still needs to reduce:

Tip #2: With Corn Starch

Cornstarch is a common thickening ingredient in the food industry, but if you add it directly into the hot sauce you want to thicken, it will clump. Cornstarch is made up of molecules that look like miniature sponges. They swell up in size as they consume more water. Every type of starch goes through the same process.

To begin, put one tablespoon of cornstarch into a small dish, and stir in an equal amount of cold liquid (you can use stock, water, or wine). When the mixture has formed a smooth paste, It is a slurry. If you want the right consistency, you need to add in the hot, boiling liquid. Bring to a boil, then after it has cooked, reduce the heat and simmer for some time to remove any leftover starchy flavor.

You can add cornstarch to a sauce made with tomatoes to make it thicker, but the cornstarch will lose some of its effectiveness if the sauce has a high acidity level. In this situation, you might use either arrowroot or tapioca starch as an alternative. These two alternatives are preferable because cornstarch can take on a spongy texture when frozen, so if you create something you want to freeze, these are the better choices.

Tip #3: With Pasta Water

Any good chef will tell you not to waste any ingredients, and pasta water is no exception since pasta water contains starch which will thicken the marinara sauce like corn starch. The pasta water will also give it a nice creamy flavor and texture as a nice bonus.

Your marinara sauce won’t thicken just by adding pasta water. Instead, it would help if you let it simmer on low heat for all of the starch left by the pasta to thicken and give your sauce some body. Also, don’t salt your marinara sauce if you add pasta water to your sauce so as not to over-salt your pasta because when making pasta, you usually add salt to the water unless you like bland pasta.

Tip #4: Using Cheese Or Dairy Products

There are other dairy products besides butter that you may use to thicken your marinara sauce in addition to the butter. The topping of shredded parmesan or pecorino cheese is a favorite option for many people regarding sauce. It imparts a luscious smoothness and flavor to the sauce. Of course, any cream cheese will do in this situation.

Tip #5: Using Bread Crumbs

Adding bread crumbs to your marinara sauce will help to thicken the sauce and give it more structure. In addition, bread crumbs are a very cost-efficient option for thickening soup, which is why they frequently get used.

It will enable you to use any stale bread you would have thrown away. If you are in the mood for laziness and do not want to deal with breaking your bread, you may toss vast pieces of bread into the soup pot and let the boiling process break them down into smaller pieces.

Tip #6: Using Beurre Manié

You might not even be familiar with this method of thickening soup called Beurre Manié, which translates as kneaded butter in French. Although butter and flour are required for the preparation, you should use the same quantity of both ingredients. When they say kneading, they mean nothing more than mixing the two components with a fork or your fingers.

Scoop out little balls of the mixture the size of a teaspoon, drop them into your sauce, and heat for at least a minute after processing the ingredients until they resemble a smooth paste. At this point, the sauce should have reached the desired consistency, and the butter should have melted.

If it is too watery, add one more Beurre ball to the mixture. Beurre Manié can make even the worst things taste better is maybe its greatest asset. Ask any chef to tell you that including it in your sauce will create a sleek gloss.

Tip #7: With Mashed Potatoes

When making the Marinara sauce at home, if it seems like a giant pot of depressing food, add one spoonful of instant mashed potatoes. Then, all you have to do to make your sauce thicker is stir in a tiny quantity of instant mash, like Smash. It will work in a relatively short length of time.

If you don’t want to use quick mash, you may replace it with some leftover mashed potatoes. For those who don’t have access to pre-cooked mashed potatoes, you can substitute it with frozen hash browns, a sauce thickener you’ve never thought to use to its fullest potential.

It is because frozen hash browns are the best possible thickening you’ve ever imagined using in your sauce. When hash browns are warmed gently in a sauce, they transform into a tasty starch that does not form clumps and may be used to thicken a sauce, a chowder, or even a stew or chili. It is because hash browns have already been cooked and shredded before being reheated.

The addition of hash browns will give that sauce a more substantial flavor. You may use the frozen hash brown thickening technique on the stovetop, but you’ll find it works much better in the slow cooker. Because it takes some time for those hash browns to dissolve, you must be sure to cook them gently, at a moderate temperature, and for a considerable amount of time.

Tip #8: With Ground Meat

When I consider a method to thicken my Marinara sauce for spaghetti, the first thing that springs to mind is the addition of meat. It is because the ground meat must be cooked separately from the other ingredients in the cuisine.

I always brown my ground meat first. After that, pour in the marinara sauce, bring to a boil, and continue to cook while occasionally stirring for the maximum amount of time. If you do this, the flavor of your sauce will be at a new level.

After each bite, you’ll find that the robust taste and thick consistency remain on your tongue for some time after you swallow. Therefore, it is suggested that you use either ground beef, pulled pork, or bacon pieces when it comes to the kinds of meats most frequently utilized in this procedure.

Tip #9: Using Egg Yolk

There will be no change to the marinara sauce’s appearance, consistency, or flavor if egg yolks are used to thicken it. In a bowl, whisking continuously, add a couple of spoons’ worth of hot sauce to one or two egg yolks. Continue to add the sauce gently while whisking. It won’t end up overcooking the egg yolk due to this. In addition, you should continue to simmer the Marinara for a few more minutes while mixing it with the egg.

Tip #10: Using Tomato Paste

Your homemade marinara sauce can be thickened by adding a tiny amount of tomato paste, but the flavor won’t be dramatically affected. This highly concentrated tomato-based product has a viscosity similar to paste, and it can thicken any sauce while naturally increasing the taste of tomatoes.

One of the most beneficial uses for tomato paste is a natural thickening for tomato-based sauces. However, it is also one of its most widely used applications. This essential item in the pantry will help modify a sauce’s consistency while enhancing the deep, delicious scents already in tomato sauce.

You may get close to creating the perfect sauce by using one or two teaspoons, allowing it to simmer over low heat for an additional five minutes, and then serving it. Following these steps can increase the tomato taste in your sauce. Using less tomato paste than tomato puree (more watery tomato liquid) would be best.

This method is also great for thickening salsa and tomato soup.

More Questions About How To Thicken Marinara Sauce

What Distinguishes Spaghetti Sauce From The Marinara Sauce?

Marinara is easier than spaghetti sauce since it requires fewer ingredients and takes less time to make. Spaghetti sauce, on the other hand, is unique because it has a more robust flavor, more components, and a more substantial and complex structure.

In contrast to spaghetti sauce, which frequently contains ins meat, the marinara sauce does not. Therefore, it results in a more watery sauce. Also, in contrast to pasta sauce, Marinara is commonly used as a dipping sauce.

What Are The Ingredients For A Good Marinara Sauce?

Whole peeled tomatoes, the better the quality of tomatoes, the better the result

Finely chopped cloves of garlic

Salt to taste

Coarse Black pepper

Fresh basil leaves

Finely chopped fresh parsley

Extra virgin olive oil

Can You Freeze Marinara Sauce To Use Later?

For future usage, the marinara sauce can get frozen. It won’t go bad if kept frozen for up to six months. Divide the sauce into servings after it has had time to cool, and then put each dish in a freezer-safe bag or another container. Then you can put the sauce in the freezer after labeling it.

Conclusion

There are so many ways to make delicious marinara at home. You can use fresh tomatoes, or canned. You can add a variety of ingredients for flavor and texture. One of the greatest things about marinara is how much better it tastes after simmering for a long period of time. If your marinara is too runny, you can always reduce it more! If that’s not good enough, you can also try other methods like cornstarch, pasta water, and more. Good luck!

Gumbo is one of my all-time favorite West African-South Louisiana dishes. This delectable, hearty stew from the Cajun-Creole cuisine always has me smacking my lips and wishing for more. After learning to make it at home, I sometimes end up with the soup being too runny, and traditional gumbo is thick, so it has become essential to learn how to thicken gumbo.

You can thicken gumbo by making a roux, a flour, or cornstarch slurry, mixing in cornmeal, adding more vegetables like okra, or reducing the liquid by cooking it down. Ingredients like instant mash, cream, or coconut milk can also thicken gumbo but will be less traditional.

Gumbo does not have to be thick if you prefer it more like a soup consistency, but if you want to stick as close as possible to the traditional dish, there are several things you can do to thicken the delicious stew.

The Best Ways To Thicken Gumbo

Traditional Louisiana gumbo is made with a roux that allows the soup to thicken. If you add too much liquid, it will still be thin instead of thick. The quickest way to prevent that is to make some extra roux and add only a little broth or water until you reach your desired thickness.

Other methods to thicken gumbo include mixing in a slurry made from flour or cornstarch, soup powder, non-traditional ingredients like cream or coconut milk, and my favorite one, additional vegetables. Below is a detailed list of the tips and techniques you can use to thicken gumbo.

Tip #1: Make More Roux

If you have ever looked into a gumbo recipe or even tried one, you know that making a roux is part of the method. The issue is that sometimes quantities get mixed up, especially if you don’t measure your ingredients, and you can still end up with gumbo that is too thin.

The number one trick I always use when making gumbo is making twice the roux the recipe calls for. You can store the excess in a zip lock baggie in the refrigerator, which I use in pasta or casserole within 2-3 days. The best part is that the roux is cooked, so you won’t get a raw flour taste whether you use it for the gumbo or another dish.

Before adding extra roux to your gumbo, whisk it with hot water to smoothen it out and remove lumps. Then stir it into your pot of gumbo and allow it to simmer for a few minutes. The liquid will thicken, and your gumbo will remain authentic.

Tip #2: Cook Down The Gumbo

If you have more time, but do not want to add or change anything with the ingredients, then the best way to thicken your gumbo would be using the reduction method. This will keep your gumbo authentic, reduce it to a stew as it should be, and significantly intensify the flavors.

The reduction method is where you cook down the gumbo slowly on low heat till the excess liquid evaporates and the sauce thickens. When you cook it down that way, it prevents the food from burning, and the flavors mingle deeper, making your gumbo dish taste better, in addition to the benefit of the thickened sauce.

Tip #3: Make A Slurry

You can make a slurry with one to two tablespoons of cornstarch and two to three teaspoons of water. Before adding it to the gumbo, mix it well to remove the lumps. Stir the gumbo as you pour the slurry in, and then let the dish simmer to incorporate the thickener. As the gumbo simmers, the sauce will thicken.

Instead of cornstarch, you could use arrowroot powder or another alternate flour base that works for your diet. Regular flour also makes a decent slurry if you don’t have premade roux; however, you will need to let the flour slurry cook into the gumbo well to prevent a raw flour or bitter taste. (Also works for thickening soups and stews in the crockpot!)

Tip #4: Add Instant Soup

Instant soup is another innovative way to thicken gumbo and works the same way as the slurry. Instead of cornstarch, you could use a couple of tablespoons of soup powder. A vegetable-flavored instant soup will be the best option to avoid changing the flavor of authentic gumbo.

If you want to avoid lumps of raw soup powder getting into your mouth when enjoying your gumbo, ensure to whisk the soup powder with water until it is smooth before pouring it into the pot. The gumbo will thicken almost immediately, but I suggest letting it simmer for a few minutes on low heat to incorporate the flavors.

Tip #5: Add More Veggies

Veggies are an excellent way to thicken any soup-based dish like gumbo. They absorb excess liquid as they cook and also provide additional nutritional benefits. Gumbo naturally has chunks of protein and veggies, so a few extra vegetables will not significantly alter the dish’s texture.

You could add more of the existing veggies that authentic gumbo requires, such as onions or peppers, or chop up a carrot or cube potato and dump it in. as the vegetables cook, the soup will reduce, giving you a thicker base and stew-like consistency.

This method is great for a variety of stew-like dishes, including tomato soup and baked beans.

Tip #6: Mix In Cornmeal

Cornmeal is a fantastic option to thicken your gumbo but remember that it might take away from the traditional gumbo consistency. I am that home cook that enjoys playing around with different ingredients and experiments beyond what the recipe calls for. I found that cornmeal works well while experimenting with giving the gumbo some texture instead of the regular smooth soup.

Depending on the quantity of your gumbo and excess liquid, you could add anything from a quarter cup to one cup of cornmeal. Mix it with water to prevent lumps, and stir it into the gumbo. It makes the gumbo stew slightly more hearty and filling. I find that you don’t have to serve it over rice or with bread. The cornmeal makes it thick enough and gives it a unique texture to enjoy the dish without any sides or additions.

Tip #7: Use Instant Mash

Instant mash might be something you want to serve your gumbo over, but did you know you can thicken your gumbo soup with a few spoons of instant mash powder? You would make it as you would a slurry. Then stir it into your gumbo, which will immediately thicken the liquid. I prefer to simmer it for a couple of minutes to intensify the flavors, but you don’t have to do that.

The great thing about using instant mash as a gumbo thickener is that you can do it right before serving if you suddenly feel like your soup is too thin. Bare in mind that sticking to the plain original flavor instant mash is best to avoid altering the taste, but if you use other flavors, it could make your gumbo even more delicious.

Tip #8: Add Cooking Cream Or Coconut Milk

Cooking cream or coconut milk/cream as a thickener will take your gumbo far from being traditional. It will modernize the gumbo slightly, but it will thicken the sauce. Cream and coconut milk will alter the taste and enrich your gumbo.

Even though this option reduces the intensity, it is an excellent option if it is all you have or if you would like to add a modern twist to the dish. The cream will thicken as the gumbo simmers and the water content reduces, giving you a delicious, hearty, unique gumbo meal.

Conclusion

Gumbo is a hearty meal, perfect for a variety of occasions. There are a variety of ways you can thicken up your gumbo if it seems too watery. Cooking down the gumbo is probably the best method if you have enough time. But if you’re short on time, making a slurry or using other added ingredients is great too!

When making Ganache, you want to make sure that it is nice and thick so that it can coat everything in an even and uniform manner. So how exactly do you get the right consistency for your Ganache?

You can thicken a Ganache by adding extra chocolate if it is too runny or by adding less heavy cream. Add more heavy cream to the Ganache if you prefer it thinner. Use two parts chocolate to one part heavy cream when making a particularly rich chocolate Ganache, such as the filling for truffles.

The following are several different ways that can assist you in preventing your Ganache from being too runny.

Best Ways To Thicken Ganache

Using less cream or adding more chocolate will thicken your Ganache. The proper ratio to make Ganache is equal to cream to chocolate, measured by the weight ratio. There are other ways to thicken your Ganache. You can add cornstarch, cinnamon, or powdered sugar. The other way is to chill it or by whipping it.

Tip #1: Thicken Your Ganache With Chocolate

Use chocolate chips and melts, such as those made by Nestle and Cadbury, available at your neighborhood grocery shop to prevent your chocolate Ganache from becoming thin and runny. Additionally, chocolate chips and melts are less likely to melt.

In addition to this, working with them is less complicated than working with chocolate bricks. Utilizing chocolate chips and melts yields the best results when preparing chocolate Ganache. Consequently, we strongly recommend that you do so.

Your Ganache can be thicker by either reducing the amount of cream or increasing the amount of chocolate used. When making Ganache, the proportion of cream to chocolate should be equal, as determined by the weight ratio.

The ratio can change depending on your Ganache and what you’re using it for. Want a thicker Ganache for brownies? Use double the chocolate to cream ratio, so 2:1 in weight. Want a runnier pourable Ganache use a 1:1.5 ratio.

Adding extra chocolate is one of the easiest ways to thicken your Ganache without altering the taste of your Ganache too much.

Suppose you didn’t get your Ganache at the right consistency. After the chocolate mousse has cooled, you will find that it has an exceptionally liquid texture. After that, reheat the Ganache in the microwave at intervals of thirty seconds each. It would be best if you stirred it after each break.

Then incorporate some chocolate that has been melted into the mixture. After that, whisk it into the Ganache until it is thoroughly combined. You must repeat this step for a few minutes or until it has reached the desired smoothness, temperature, and consistency.

The Thickness Between White And Dark Chocolate In A Ganache

The thickness of your Ganache will also depend on the type of chocolate you use in your Ganache. For example, white chocolate is softer, so it will use less cream, whereas dark chocolate is harder and, therefore, will need more cream.

Dark Chocolate Ganache

Tart filling and ice cream sauce are examples of baked goods that benefit from the usage of Ganache in the pastry kitchen. In the pastry kitchen, Ganache is an indispensable ingredient. The only components of dark chocolate Ganache are chocolate and heavy cream, and the ratio of these two ingredients is the same in every batch. Create the Ganache using at least 60 percent chocolate.

The ratio of chocolate to cream in a Ganache may vary from two to one depending on its intended usage. Before beginning this process, we recommend that the chocolate gets cut into bite-sized pieces. Finely chop the chocolate in a bowl or food processor, stirring in the butter. Warm the cream in a basin safe for use in the microwave until it is almost at a simmer.

The cream should be brought to a temperature just below boiling point before the process is successful. Preparing a cup of cream requires approximately two to three minutes on average. Immediately pour the cream over the chocolate when it has been melted.

Because stirring will speed up the melting process, you should refrain from stirring for the first 1-2 minutes of the process. If you are melting the chocolate in a food processor, pulse it for twenty to thirty seconds, stirring it very slowly with a wooden spoon so as not to introduce any air into the mixture.

Using a food processor makes the preparation of Ganache easier, but it also results in air bubbles in the finished product. As a direct consequence, the final product will have less luster. Refrigerated leftovers should be consumed within two to three days, while those that are frozen can be kept for up to three months.

White Chocolate Ganache

To make white chocolate, cocoa butter, milk solids, and vanilla beans are the three main ingredients. As a result, it does not include the chocolate liquid, which is responsible for giving dark chocolate its distinctive flavor. As a result, white chocolate, as opposed to dark chocolate, possesses a less overpowering flavor.

Because of its lack of discernible flavor, white chocolate Ganache lends itself to being infused with other flavors. The White Chocolate Ganache becomes airy and fluffy after being whipped, and it almost dissolves in your tongue as you eat it. Ganache prepared with white chocolate can get used in making extravagant and delicious icing for cakes.

Because white chocolate is more delicate than dark chocolate, it requires a lower amount of cream to achieve the desired results. Therefore, it is not allowed to substitute “coating chocolate” or white chocolate chips for fine white chocolate. Only high-quality chocolate will produce a Ganache that lives up to its name.

When 8-10 ounces of white chocolate are combined with 4 ounces of cream, the result is a white chocolate Ganache that is solid but airy and can be whipped into a fluffy frosting. To make truffles, you will need 10 ounces of white chocolate and 4 ounces of cream.

To produce a Ganache that may be whipped into frosting or used as a glaze for a cake, combine eight ounces of chopped chocolate with four ounces of heavy cream in a bowl. If you don’t chop the chocolate evenly, there is a chance that some of it will remain solid even after being heated. You risk overcooking the dish if you reheat the entire batch at once.

Instead, take a tiny amount, about half a cup’s worth, and melt it in the microwave before whisking it into the Ganache. It will soften the remainder of the chocolate. Before whipping it, it is best to wait until the Ganache has reached room temperature, but you should not let it ultimately set because of how quickly it hardens after being whipped with air.

Ganache that has been whipped should be used as soon as possible. After the first two to three days of storage at room temperature, white chocolate Ganache must be refrigerated or frozen to be kept for a more extended period.

Tip #2: Whip The Ganache

Cover and chill the Ganache until it is at the desired consistency of extremely thick frosting or filling. The next step is to whisk the Ganache with the paddle attachment of a hand or stand mixer. The Ganache maintains its deep chocolate flavor even after being stored. It becomes airier and denser. It can either be piped on top of a dessert or uniformly distributed around the surface of the dessert.

Tip #3: Chill The Ganache

Hot Ganache is much thinner and runny than cold or even chilled Ganache would be, so always keep your Ganache cold before serving to ensure that your Ganache is nice and thick. If you want a thicker Ganache, try chilling it in the refrigerator for an hour. Please remove it from the freezer after half an hour and stir it to help it set.

The standard version of Ganache can be stored at room temperature for up to two days before it needs to be transferred to the refrigerator. It is best always to keep it in the fridge if you want to be on the safe side, which we recommend. The shelf life of frozen Ganache is approximately one month. The refrigerator is perfect for defrosting food before it comes to room temperature.

Tip # 4: Thicken Your Ganache With Cornstarch

If you want to thicken your Ganache even more but don’t want it to taste too sweet, cornstarch can be added as a thickener for the frosting. However, if you use more than a tablespoon of cornstarch in the Ganache, it has the potential to become too starchy. In addition to that, it is not an easy undertaking.

The Ganache has the necessary amount of moisture for the cornstarch, but for it to thoroughly cook, it needs to be brought to a simmer for some time. Unfortunately, it isn’t easy to simmer Ganache without it becoming grainy due to the simmering process. If you are not careful, it will turn into pudding instead of a Ganache.

Tip #5: Another Way To Thicken Your Ganache Is By Adding Cinnamon

Cinnamon thickens the Ganache but also altars the flavor quite heavily. That is because more than half of cinnamon gets made up of a carbohydrate known as polysaccharides, including pectin and cellulose. Carbohydrate is among the three primary nutrients in food and beverages, alongside proteins and fats. Your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, which is used as a fuel source.

Carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids are the three primary nutrients in foods and beverages. Polysaccharides can swell and absorb water when they come into contact with it. Because cinnamon contains these compounds, it can thicken hot and fluid foods almost as effectively as cornstarch.

Tip #6: Use Powdered Sugar

Before adding the powdered sugar to the Ganache to make it thicker, the Ganache needs to cool for at least two hours. After passing the powders sugar through a sieve to remove any lumps, add it to the Ganache when it is ready to receive the powdered sugar. Blend by hand or with an electric stand mixer until completely smooth. Powdered sugar will make the Ganache’s hue seem paler and give it a sweeter flavor.

Conclusion

Chocolate ganache is wonderfully rich, a delicious way to make cakes and pastries even better. It can be a little tricky to make for a beginner, so make sure you have a good recipe to begin with. If you still find yourself in a bind with runny ganache, try thickening it with more chocolate, cornstarch, cinnamon, or other methods! Good luck!
